The results of different years for the zero of position seem to shew that it is very constant. In the year 1868 I made a considerable number of observations to determine the stability and the error of position of the polar axis. The following observations, made nearly in the meridian, are for the determination of the error of elevation. April 4. After the first observation of Regnlus, the position of the declination-circle was slightly shifted on the axis, so as to make the readings cast and west very nearly equal, and the observation in the west position of telescopo was repeated. April 20. After the observations the ixing-screw for elevation was tightened. A slight effect is perceptible in the results of April 29, the error of elevation being increased. May 2. After the observation of 8 Leonis the error of elevation was corrected, and the index correction made smaller. The following observations were made for the determination of the azimuthal deviation of the axis from the meridian. As the construction of the instrument is such that it is almost impossible to observe stars in reversed positions of the telescope, at the six-hour angle, I chose a series of circumpolar stars, which could be observed in pairs, one above and one below the pole, the telescope being south of the pier and the declination-circle north. The following table gives the observations and the results: --The Catalogue of the Distances and Angles of Position of the Double Stars requires very little explanation.
