Sadly, the 1989 performance heard on this CD turned out to be among Astor Piazzolla's last live performances. The Argentinian tango revolutionary would subsequently suffer a major stroke that left him severely disabled and ended his musical career. But there is no evidence of Piazzolla's health failing on this outstanding release, which finds him leading his New Tango Sextet and being joined by pianist Gerardo Gandini, guitarist Horacio Manvicino, fellow bandoneon player Daniel Binelli, cellist Jose Bragato and bassist Hector Console. Piazzolla gave 100% on stage, and he is in excellent form on such celebrated pieces as "Michelangelo," "Milonga del Angel," "Tango Zero Hour" and "Tanguedia III." This isn't optimistic music -- there is a great deal of sadness in Piazzolla's playing as well as a lot of passion, depth and beauty. Piazzolla had long since found the courage to be himself, and that courage continued to be artistically rewarding during the twilight of his long career. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
