At first sight Wedekind, Kokoschka and Kaiser appear to challenge the conventional views of sexuality which were current during the Wilhelmine period, whereby female sexuality was denied and male sexual aggression was approved. However, the actual fate of the female characters in the plays is usually such that the conventional view of sexuality is reinforced.
