The skeptic I am, I thought, 'What could a book published back in 1973 possibly contribute to creating art from scrap materials. After all, there are so many newer books on the subject.' I was fortunate to have been able to borrow a copy of the book from a colleague; after a quick perusal, I place an order for my own used copy. First of all, this book does not feel at all dated. The graphics and photographs are as fresh as if they were published only a few years ago, except that they are in black-and-white. No big deal. This book covers a wide range of subjects and media, as well as multiple cultural traditions. My only criticism is the inconsistent arrangement of chapters, which are named both for the type of art covered and a medium: titles include graphics, sculpture, metal, paper, packing materials, plaster, containers, collage, jewelry, masks, mosaics, puppets, and weaving. That, and the absence of an index and table of contents can make finding a specific topic difficult. However, the ideas are so creative and aesthetically pleasing, one should not be too upset about having to look through all the pages. Cultural traditions covered include some Native American themes and African masks. I only wish more toys were featured. That notwithstanding, this book is more in depth than many of its newer counterparts. It will provide teachers (general, art, and special-ed), artists, and art scholars with many ideas that are not only useful, but also highly creative and aesthetically pleasing.
