English summary: The concept of giving help to the poor, a concept firmly anchored in Christian doctrine, was an important pillar of post middle age society both north and south of the Alps. In the course of the reformation, completely new ways of organizing welfare had to be found. A team of international experts from the Wolfenbuttel based working group for renaissance studies discussed the social challenges caused by poverty and how these challenges were met with the help of charitable projects in Italy and the Holy Roman Empire from the 14th to the 18th century. The results published in this corresponding anthology are in part based on significant case studies and in part on the evaluation of comprehensive archive material. The studies also show how texts, images and buildings were used as means of expressing poverty in the cultural discourse of the time. It is therefore above all literary, artistic and architectural remains which grant access to an understanding of poverty in the early modern period, seeing that the anonymous mass of the poor rarely have their say in the sources of the time.
