The title comes from a song by Rachmaninov about a shipwreck survivor, and most of the music does strike a nice balance between the personal-psychological and the general. The main thread knitting the program together is the songs' reference, to a greater or lesser degree, to folk music. Romaniw has a lovely rounded voice that has made quite a splash. One wouldn't say that her singing has a great emotional range at this point, but she's quite affecting in the simpler, most folkish material. Sample the sets Moravian Folk Poetry in Songs, by Janácek, and A Tale of the Heart, Op. 8, by Janácek's follower, Vitezslav Novák: despite their modern elements, these are the simplest melodies, and Romaniw delivers real emotional intensity....
