Archipelago was the winner of the 1996 American Book Award in Poetry. By turns spiritual and creative, meditative and active, Archipelago draws upon both Buddhist and Native American art and culture and is inspired by the Zen garden at Ry an-ji. The fifteen poems, like stones set in a sea of raked gravel, are seen only within the context of a larger interdependence.

Born in New York City and educated at the University of California, Berkeley, poet Arthur Sze has been a longtime resident of New Mexico. For many years, he has taught at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. His work is infused with, and inspirited by, the textures and colors of the New Mexican landscape and cultures. In Archipelago, Sze's poems hybridize the spirit of a Zen garden with native culture and other geographies, and the associations, analogues, correspondences and mind-leaps--rather like the linked but separate islands of the title--are quite startling and extraordinary. This poetry volume is highly recommended.
