The truth is, that, with that solitary exception, Ihave not cared to be indebted to woodcuts. My Cuts are all executed by my own pen; and, if they are thought neither sufficiently keen nor sufficiently numerous, I must endeavour to be less merciful in future than I have shewn myself on the present occasion. If, moreover, cuts of that very luminous descrip tion are not sufficient to illustrate my book, I can only say, that book, readers, and author, ought all of them to continue in the dark.
