It is concerned with the generation, distribution and transmission of electricity, along with the design of a range of related devices. These include electric motors, electric generators, transformers and power electronics. The field of telecommunication focuses on the transmission of information across a communication channel such as free space, coax cable and optical fiber. The information has to be encoded in a carrier signal to transfer it to a carrier frequency that is suitable for transmission. The use of nanotechnology in electrical engineering has resulted in the production of nanoelectronics. It covers a diverse set of devices and materials such as one-dimensional nanotubes or nanowires and advanced molecular electronics.
