It was a harder task to Convince the public mind that Jordaens, like Frans Hals, was a great and true artist in paint, and that if he painted the somewhat coarse and exuberant life of his time and his home, he was as much entitled to do this as the artists of the nineteenth century were to depict the elegant inanities and affecta tions of their own surroundings.
