This was a good read for an overview of Antarctic history; a little bit of something by many of the early exporers. I sometimes longed for more information from the author who compiled the excerpts of these travel journals. Some terms were new to me, but then that's why they invented the dictionary. One could read this for a broad overview, then read further about any of the many men whose travel journals were excerpted. I learned from, and enjoyed , all the accounts, but I particularly enjoyed the writings of Paul Siple, the "first Boy Scout" to go to the Pole, in 1933-35. But his later writings, from a stay in 1957-58 and are in this book are more "modern" and he wrote more about the psychology of the men wintering there. Another excerpt was of Shakelton's famous 800 mile boat ride to go for help as he left men behind after their ship was crushed by ice. One of my favorites was by Apsley Cherry-Garrard from his account of "The Worst Journey in the World". It may have been! In all, parts of journals from 14 different men are in this book, from Cook to Hillary.
