Excerpt from Annual Register of the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD: September 24, 1937 Beginning in the year' 1899, following an appropriation of by Congress for the purpose, the Naval Academy was almost completely rebuilt in the Italian Renaissance Style after the designs of the architect Mr, Ernest Flagg, of New York. The grounds of the Academy proper now comprise 224 acres along the west bank of the Severn River, on which are 125 major buildings representing an investment of about 000. An act of Congress approved on May 25, 1933, authorized the Superintendent to confer the degree of bachelor of science upon all graduates from and after the date of the accrediting of the Academy by the Association of American Universities. That association placed the Naval Academy on its approved list on October 25, 1930, and graduates commencing with the class of 1931 became eli 'gible for the degree. By Virtue of an act of Congress approved July the Superintendent is now authorized to confer the degree upon all living graduates.
