Army, 1776-1900 and Francis Heit man's two volume Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army. Whatever their fame, infamy, or Obscurity, each deserves a measure Of recognition._ Some commanded Fort Lara mie under incredible handicaps. Some lacked men and supplies. More than a few lacked experience. Yet, considering the circum stances, most Of these men performed adequately, and a few brilliantly.
