Tolstoy knew people. He knew how to make them live and breathe on the page. This is truly one of the greatest novels I've ever read, because all of the people inhabiting his story are individual creations that matter, regardless of their status as principal or supporting characters. As Anna destroys her life for what she believes is passionate love, she becomes more and more isolated from anyone who can actually help her see the truth in people or in life. She becomes a victim of her own paranoia. As a foil we have Levin who, in an opposite arc, comes into his own because of the love of a young woman. This achingly beautiful story sparkles with life and is devastating in its portrayal of Anna as she loses access to herself and to what was best in her, her compassion, her intelligence, her poise and her connection with those she loved.

Anna Karenina
This is one of the most engaging books I've ever read. I do tons of reading for my college classes and so haven't read many just-for-fun books in a long time but I can't put this one down. I know people say that about almost every book but it's really true about Anna Karenina. The characters are so well described that you feel as if you had met them yourself. Only a well written book could make it's reader feel so strongly about each and every character, even the minor ones. Tolstoy is a genius and insightful writer.
