Together, the three volumes provide an invaluable resource for the study of Anglo-Saxon architecture. Volume I, a short introduction, is a survey of pre-Conquest architectural features and the reasons for designating them as characteristically Anglo-Saxon. Volume II is the catalogue. In it each church is described in turn, in alphabetical order of parish names. Finally, the 1984 third volume was a landmark text in its field, taking the churches of Volumes I and II as its starting point, and establishing the logical basis for believing that churches do contain pre-Norman fabric. This volume also provides a comprehensive index and important amendments to the first two volumes.
