What a wonderful sad yet humorous memoir. Also uplifting in that he rose above the poverty etc and made it back to the states and became a teacher. Interesting how so many people come here from other countries and succeed yet some of our own are happy to live in squalor and poverty with help from the government. A really good book.

Listen to this book!
I checked out the audio-tape version of the book after visiting Ireland in 2009 at the time of Frank McCourt's death. I loved the tapes because he read it himself (and the two following the first) and his Irish accent just lends it such authenticity! His siblings were so comical and pitiful , The descriptions are so vivid, I still see the characters in my mind. I laughed out loud so often. If you read the book, try also to listen to the tapes.

Awesome!!!
I loved this book & never wanted to put it down! The setting & how everything was described made you feel like you were actually there. It was absolutely the best book that I've ever read...so good that I even purchased the DVD!

My Thoughts on Angela's Ashes
This book was riveting from cover to cover. Frank McCourt tells about his Irish Catholic upbringing in the midst of devastating poverty. The setting of the story starts out in New York City in the early 1900s, and then moves to Northern Ireland when Frank's parents decide they might do well to live closer to family. Frank's father is an alcoholic with only short bouts of employment. Frank's twin brothers become ill and die within months of each other. Amidst these and other continuing hardships, young Frank manages to find employment, get an education, and eventually move back to the United States. Ultimately, this is a story about a young man who triumphs against astonishing odds.
