Shaw's version of the old legend of the taming of the lion is as funny as it is serious. Androcles, the scanty little taylor, seems to become himself a lion in courage only because of his love for every creature. So he draws the thorn out of the lion's paw, and the grateful animal will not eat him later on in the circus maximus in Rome. Around this simple fable the author arranges a wonderful crowd of very different people, Christians, heathens, Romans, gladiators, officers, even the Roman emperor himself, so that all sorts of attitudes to religion, to superstition, to winning and losing, love, hate and fear can be shown. Though the perfectly acting lion (luckily he does not speak) is always very funny, the discussions about faith are not, so that the reader or the audience get a lot to think about - a very clever combination, as in many of Shaw's plays.
