Very Good. Issued Without a Dust Jacket. Book "A Monoday" on the death of Andre by Miss Seward and Andre's letters added followed by notes to the binder and two pages of ads by the publisher. Illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece of Andre, a fold-out maps of the northeastern portion of the US and an engraving of Andre's monument at Westminster Abbey. This printing preceded the American publication by Evert Duyckinck of New York by a year. This British edition is also much longer than the American edition which contained only 214 pages. (Howes, S-631; Sabin 83422, Gephart 7806). First and only edition of Joshua Hett Smith's 'An Authentic narrative of the causes which led to the Death of Major Andre...', printed in London, 1808. A very good clean and complete copy, with the folding map of North America and two further engraved plates as called for. 8vo, bound in period half calf over marbled boards, recased with original backstrip laid down, spine gilt decorated with five raised bands, green morocco gilt title label. Page edges speckled. The book measures 12.5cm by 21cm. The contents are complete, meeting collation: vi, [1], 357, [3]pp, with portrait frontispiece, folding map of North America and one further engraved plate as called for. A single leaf of publisher's advertisements bound at rear. Condition: The binding is holding firmly and is in good condition, with some general wear to surface / extremities from handling, edges bumped and spine darkened. Contents are holding firmly and in very good condition, with just occasional minor spots, a few light creases or handling marks, title and frontis a little foxed. Period plain endpapers with joints renewed, recent armorial bookplate to upper pastedown.
