Mr. Ray supposes them to be a kind of collection of the stamini of the flowers ot the tree; because in fertile trees a'd plants they have abundance of seminal vessels and seed-Dods. JU'LIAN Period so called of Julius CeJar Scaliger the inventor ot it is a cycle ot 7980 years successively following one another; by the continual multiplication of the three cycles, viz. that of the fun of 23 years, and that of the moon of 19 years, and that of the indiction of 15 years; which Epocba, although but feigned, is yet ot very good use in calculation, in that every year.within the period, is distinguishable by a certain peculiar character; for the year of the sun, moon, and the indiction will not be the same again, till the whole 7980 yeais be revolved. He fixed the beginning of this period 761 years before the creation. JU'LIAN year, is the old account of the year (or a space ot time consisting of 365 days and 6 hours, instituted by Julius Gesar, who caused the Roman calendar to be reformer) which to this day we use in England, and call ic the old stile in contradistinction to the new account, framed by pope Gregory, which is 11 days before ours, and iscalled the new stile. JU'LY was so called of Julius Ctfar, who regulated the year, for betcre that time that month was called 2uintilis the 7th month in the year.
