Downy Mildew's evolution from cryptic folk-pop to alternative rock powerhouse was complete with An Oncoming Train, a release which dispensed with mystery in favor of an accessible sound. This isn't to say that these songs aren't without merit; several are very good, and "Elevator" is a complete pop gem, with a sultry Jenny Homer vocal over an insanely catchy guitar hook. In fact, Homer's vocals are at their peak throughout this album, and she assays a wide variety of moods with success. An Oncoming Train has several songs that are excellent, presented with more complex arrangements and a wider range of textures than the band had tried before.
