Bobbs-Merrill, first ed.; unpaginated but approx. 80 p., clean and unmarked, except for penciled price by former book seller; on fine paper, only very mildly age-toned but with occasional small spots of foxing; enchanting ill. by Howard Chandler Christy capture the combination of humor and sentiment that characterizes the poet; binding firm; in absence of d.j., faded green boards much scuffed and bumped, which keeps this from being "very good." The oval portrait on the front board of the "sweetheart" is fine, though, and could be lifted and retained if volume is rebound.

Size: 0x0x0; No, this is not the leather-bound reprint reproduced here but an outwardly shabby but authentic first edition published by Bobbs-Merrill in 1902--if beautifully rebound its value would greatly increase because of the exquisite ill. by Howard Chandler Christy, the famous celebrity portraitist and creator of the "Christy Girl." Though volume is unpaginated) (approx. 90 p. ) it has 19 full-page b&w ill. ("Studies from Life") as well as an oval watercolor portrait of the "old sweetheart, " we assume, on the front board, with additional "decorations" by Virginia Keep. Only marking is gift inscription on front end page. Fine quality paper is very strong and only mildly age-toned, but the volume has been roughly handled, the spines are cracked, leaving signatures exposed, there is chipping of end pages, and bumping of corners of faded green boards with red and green blind-stamped rose design. These flaws reduced the condition of this volume to only "acceptable." If not rebound, the full-page ill. are suitable for framing, having suffered no damage or marking and only very mild age-toned. One charming attraction of the ill. is the decor of the book-lined study in which the poet muses: he sits in what appears to be a Stickley chair, and smokes a "Habana" cigar at a table lit by a beautiful oil lamp.

Very good. 1902 vintage clothbound Bobbs-Merrill Co. hardcover. Blue-green cloth binding, with front side decorated and stamped in green, red and gilt. Pasted on is the oval portrait of a Christy Girl lithographed in muted tones. No marks or writing in book. The binding and hinges are strong and secure. The cloth is worn a little at spine ends and tips of corners. One little nick to cloth at top edge of rear board. A worthwhile addition to any collection of Hoosier Americana.
