The Colonel of the 33rd Regiment has given me an introduction to his family at Moscow should I be able to visit that city. An American doctor in the Russian service lent us Galignani to March 23, which was a great treat. I saw the death of my cousin, Major Blackball, announced in them. We went this morning to the market to buy provisions for the journey, as, except in the large towns, it will be difficult to get anything to eat on the road. Things were dearer than I had imagined. The following were the prices: Fowls being dear, we bought for 2s. 6d. a pair of bustards, about the size of guinea-birds, and very like in plumage--these we intend to have roasted; twenty-nine eggs 1s., to be boiled hard; one pound of cheese, 1s. id.; a smoked tongue, 1s. 4d; one pound of rusks, 1s. Tea is excessively dear; for a quarter of a pound I paid 3s. 4d., and for four pounds of beetroot sugar 4s. The morning we start, which I hear is to be positively Friday, we take a few loaves of fresh bread and two or three bottles of light Crimean wine at 1s. a bottle, so, on the whole, we shall not fare badly. At night we shall sleep in our waggons, as infinitely preferable to the post-houses. I hope to write to you again from Ekaterinoslaw; till then, adieu! God bless and protect you in all your troubles and anxieties, and send us a happy and speedy meeting!
