Presentation of the Breech, or Inferior Extremities. order second. Presentation of the Shoulder, or Superior Extremities. section I. the technical terms which are used to specify all the other classes of labours, relate to some circumstance in which the mother is wholly or partly concerned. But the term preternatural applies merely to the position of the child; and this kind of labour may occur in a woman in perfect health, when all the changes incidental to the state of parturition are made in the most favourable manner, and in whom there is the best possible formation. In short, there may be no deviation or irregularity of any kind, excepting only that the head of the child does not present. Should the presentation of another part be combined with hemorrhage, or any other circumstance of dangerous importance, either to the mother or child, the title of preternatural would be generally lost, and the labour referred to some other class.
