Of the sense in which the death of Christ is represented as a facrifice, and other figurative representations of it. HAVING explained the one great and primary end of the life and death of Christ, and also pointed out the other secondary and subordinate ends which were likewise really answered by it, I shall now attempt to illustrate the figurative representations that are made of it by the facred writers. These have unfortunately misled many christians, and have been the occasion of their entertaining opinions concerning the end of Christ's coining into the world, quite different from those which appear upon the very face of the history; opinions which are contradicted by the whole tenor of revelation, and which are extremely in - jurious to the character of the ever-blessed God. N 3 The The most remarkable of these figurative representations of the death of Christ, is that in which he is compared to a sacrifice, and as a figure, it is just and beautiful. In every sacrifice the victim is slain for the benefit of the person on whose account it is offered; so Christ, dying to procure the greatest possible benefit to the human race, is said to have given his life a sacrifice for us; and moreover as the end of the gospel is to promote the reformation of sinners, in order to procure the pardon of sin, the death of Christ is more expressly compared to asin offering.
