D. 325, to the Conclusion of the Roman Council of Trent in the Year 1563: With Incidental Notices of Other Councils; And an Appendix Containing Some Observations on the First Four General Councils, Jewel's Apology, and Nowel's Catechisms These Eighteen, according to Bellarmine, are alone recognised by the Church of Rome, as (ecumenical Councils; and yet, strange to say, the Head of that Church at his eleva tion to the Papacy, professes to maintain no more than the first eight eastern ones. But, although all are styled (ecumenical, or uni versal; some of them did not deserve the appellation, even of General Councils for not to speak of others, the far-famed Coun cil of Trent itself could scarcely reckon up in some of its Sessions, more than forty, or fifty Ecclesiastics, and of those, not one emi nent for profound theological, or classical knowledge.
