It is the same with the metals; the acids require to be mixed with water, in order to expel their phlogiston or fixed fire.and in burning them in oxygen gas, both the water and the acid of the oxygen gas enters the calx; but both the fied fire of the metal and of the oxygen gas is set loose as free fire, the same in burning both sulphur and phosphorus. Also in these bodies burning in chlorine, if the combustion is complete, both the chlorine and water enters the combustible body, forming an acid, and both their fixed fire is set locse as free fire. That fixed air is often produced from the mineral acids we have many proofs. Dr. Priestley, through all his publications, gives many experiments, where it was produced from the mineral acids, both nitric and the vitriolic.--(See his works vol. 6, page 216).--Also Dr. Austin produced it from the nitrous ammonia. And what they call carbon is produced from phosphorus, when its fixed fire is imperfectly burned, as when it is united to lime; the fire of the lime burns it into a phlogistic body like carbon. In short wee see throughout nature, that one body is formed into another, even those which they absurdly called elements. And all their elements are compound bodies.-(See my Chemical Essays, page 87.)--And that the mineral acids form fixed air, or the aerial acid, is clearly and unequivocally proved in Ridolfi's experiment, where the muriatic acid disappeared, and carbonic acid appeared; and in such immense quantities, as 181 parts of the muriatic acid;" and the aerial acid appeared in equal proportion; and which shews the beauty of the connected chain. This combustible acid, or what they called oxygenated, by p...
