Excerpt from An Eight-Century Latin-Anglo-Saxon Glossary: Preserved in the Library of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, (Ms. No. 144) I do not think that the Epinal Glossary should be dated earlier than the Corpus. Its handwriting shows it to be of the first half of the 9th century, and the organic changes and scribal corruptions, observable in_ the spelling of Latin words, are already more advanced, and in some cases show a greater slovenliness, than in the Corpus Glossary, though occasionally it has preserved more correct forms than the latter. In my opinion the Epinal ms. Stands, in point of time, much nearer to the Erfurt Glossary, which is attributed to the end of the 9th century, than to the Corpus. In the edition of the Epinal Glossary, published by the Early English Text Society, the editor expresses the Opinion that it must have been written at least a generation earlier than the Corpus ms. His opinion is not shared by competent palaeographers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at ...
