Seller's Description:
Good. Size: 12mo 7"-7; In the Preface is written "They have remarked to me (says the Bishop) that the deistical writings of Mr. Paine are circulated, with great and pernicious industry, amongst the unlearned part of the community, especially in large manufacturing towns, " and so [the author] wishes to oppose what the author calls a "torrent of infidelity" to Christian theology. Nice-looking copy, with modern marbled paper over boards, calf leather over tips, spine, which has been rebacked handsomely and with gilt titling over red burgundy leather, quite fine. Tightly bound, generally clean interior but for some toning to endpapers, lightly wavy text-block, lightly rubbed extremities, else still handsome and sturdy. The main author, Richard Watson (1737-1816), was an Anglican clergyman and academic and Christian apologist. His Wikipedia entry notes that he served as the Bishop of Llandaff from 1782 until his death. He is perhaps best known for his Christian apologias as pitched against secular authorities such as the logician Thomas Paine and especially his The Age of Reason, which Watson believed to be a frontal assault on religion and Christianity. Comprises also Anecdotes of the life of Richard Watson, Bishop of Landaff (1817). 163 pp., [1] pp. of publisher advertisements. Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

Seller's Description:
Fair. 12mo. 201, [13] p. Contemporary sheep. Boards detached, wear to edges. Browning spots, dampstain throughout affecting text. List of subscriber in rear present. Evans 31567 An Apology for the Bible is Bishop Watson's answer to Thomas Paine's book The Age of Reason, Part II, which attempted to catalogue and date the writings of the books of the Bible and say how they could not have been written by the authors of the same name, as well as, debunking the writings of the books as mere fables and allegorical tales. Watson's defense of the Bible, has not lost its fervor in the echoes of time, as the same defenses for the Bible are still being used in these, our modern times. In a series of eight letters, Watson answers Paine's criticisms virtually point by point.
