We open philosophy by looking at what the sages of the ages have to say about six themes: happiness, love, the existence of God, immortality, time, and freedom. The second half shows the tools of philosophy; seven kinds of causes: self-reference, logical fallacies and the problem of reductionism; distinctions between presence and absence, one and many, problem and mystery; confusions that arise among kinds of reasoning and between work and play, etc. Most chapters end with questions for classroom use. A full bibliography is included. The work is both traditional and up-beat. Some authors outside both western and classroom philosophy are included: Sankara on happiness, Carson McCullers on love, Avicenna on immortality, Einstein and Newton on time, etc. Without tedium, suddenly one finds oneself conversant with Heidegger on time, Epicurus on happiness, Russell on self-reference, Popper and Duhem on science, Hegel and Marx on alienation and religious concepts of divine causality. The book is a prolection or distillation of intellectual juices. It occurs at the intersection of two kinds of readers--the beginner or self-tutor (autodidact) and the student/professor of introductory philosophy.
