La Martinique est situee a 14 degrez. 30 M. de latitude Septentrionale et a 61 de longitude occidentale, ayant 13 lieues de longeur, fur 7 lieues de largeur, Elle est pleine de Montaignes, dont 1' une paroit de bien loin c(tii ressemble assez a la forme d'un chapeau, et qu'on appelle par maniere de distinction le chapeau de Cardinal, qui sert de guide aux matelots, il y a du cote du nord trois petites iflesdont une s'appelle /' isle aux arbres, qui est toute couverte de bois et bien arosee, avec un bon abordage pour les bateaux: a la verite toute la Martinique est tres bien arosee, entrecoupee par tout de ruisseaux. La partie la plus belle est au sud-ouest. Elle produit le Sucre, le Rum, la Molasse, le Cotton, le Gingembre, l'Indigo ire. de meme que les autres colonies fous vent. Elle a plusieures bayes dont la principale est la grande baye du Port-Royal, capitale de l'ifle, et la baye de St. Pierre gros bourg qui en est eloigne d'environ sept lieues au nord-ouest, la rade du Port-Royal en quelques endroits a sept en d' autres cinq miles de largeur. A la hauteur de Ste. Lucie et de la Martinique. Ordre de la LIGNE de BATAILLE. Le Bervick du cote de stribord et le Burford du cote du basbord. Au Capitaine Edouard Jekyll Commandeur du Rippon. Le 14 Janvier. A' huit heures du matin 1' escadre decouvrit la Martinique a dix se trouva a la hauteur de S te. Lucie qui parut sort elevee; a midi a la hauteur de la Martinique, lorsque le Chapeau de Cardinal sut aunord nord-ouest a moitie nord, a dix lieues de distance. De 15 Janvier. A' six heures du matin.
