It is to be regretted that one of them had not extended a few feet further, as it would have equalized the bottom, and considerably increased the bearing powers of the tube; had this been done, instead of breaking with 69 tons, it is more than probable that 80 tons would have been the nearest approach to its maximum strength. But be this as it may, I should consider myself safe, in estimating the breaking weight of a well-proportioned tube of this description at 75 tons; and taking into consideration the same strain already sustained at this point of the tube, and its tortured condition in other respects, I am clearly of opinion that 75 tons is rather within than beyond its bearing powers. Assuming however 75 tons to be the ultimate strength, we should then have for the Britannia tube (as the cubes and squares of the strengths and weights respectively), a tube weighing 1200 tons, and carrying 2570 tons in the middle, inclusive of its own weight. substituting in equation (1.), we find WW.W (3.)--W to2' which is the formula enunciated in the letter. Let w=6, W = 75, and to, = 1200, then we have by equation (3.), W, = 119 j x 75=2570 tons nearly. Adopting the notation of the formulae given in page 104, equation (3.) becomes L.+ttg)1. (L+to), Another expression for the breaking load is given in equation (8.), p. 105.
