And it doesn't: with baritone Richard Jackson's lonely but cheerful Der Einsame and Der Wanderer an den Mond, tenor John Mark Ainsley's sexy and cheerful An Silvia, and espeically his extraordinary and ecstatic Nachthelle (D. 892), this volume is another peak in Johnson's Schubert edition. But a higher peak than Jackson or Ainsley is soprano Christine Schafer's performances of the Mignon Lieder. As in the earlier Goethe Schubertiad, Johnson's casting of Schafer in the role of the doomed waif is inspired: Schafer's infinitely pure and infinitely moving voice brings Mignon to life, but her hopelessly yearning interpretation foretells her tragic death.
