But, regardless of classical considerations, even the temporary sojourner plunges at once into the delightful mysteries of learning Portuguese. This is not a difficult accomplishment. A quick ear and a ready tongue work marvels, and you will soon become able to travel anywhere on the islands, relying solely on your own lingual resources. It is surprising how few words are necessary to make yourself understood. A small vocabulary, with an abundance of gesticulation and an intelligent use of the universal sign language, goes a great way. Mistakes of course you will make, but console yourself, as an English friend consoled me, with the thought that you cannot be expected to furnish your auditors with language, and also with brains for understanding it; and when a servant, to whom you have vainly endeavored to communicate your wishes, informs his master that "the gentleman talks Portuguese, but I cannot understand him," the laugh is rather against the ignorant fellow who cannot understand even what he knows to be his own language. But do not be tempted by such an experience to presume too much upon your own knowledge or your listeners' lack of it. A goodly number of the people, even in the country, will probably understand more English than you do Portuguese. Sometimes you may be unexpectedly and forcibly reminded of this An American gentleman, while walking in the country one day, desirous of airing his newly acquired accomplishment, accosted a little barefooted urchin with the customary salutation, Boas dias, Senhor, and was somewhat surprised to be answered in vigorous English, "Oh Hell!"
