A good concise review of the policy decisions, less an indepth text on the military details. It is a good read since the policy decisions led us into this morass. LBJ is perhaps unfairly remembered as the only culprit, whereas each preceding administration left it in worse shape to the successor. Johnson got the worst mess and listened to the wrong advisors.
My copy was advertised as "highlighted". I was expecting yellow highlighting NOT the dark purple which made some passages barely legible.

EXCELLENT VIETNAM WAR PRIMER
I found George C. Herring's "America'a Longest War: The United States and Vietnam, 1950-1975" an excellent one volume primer on the Vietnam War from the American perspective. In a relatively short narrative (272pp), Herring presents the broad outlines of the Vietnam experience from the end of World War II to the Fall of Saigon. It is excellent storytelling, a quick read and quite a page turner. I highly recommend this volume (from 1979) to the student of U.S. History and can easily see this work offered as required reading for advanced courses on American History since World War II, American Diplomatic History and The Vietnam War. Graduate students, teachers and other US History enthusiasts would want this volume in their collections for the footnotes and the chapter on "Suggestions for Additional Reading" to show the state of Vietnam War historiography and research materials at the time of Herring's writing.
