MANY yachtsmen in these days begin their sea experience in large sloops or schooners, which carry heavy crews and as many officers as half the deep-water ships sailing out of our greatest seaports. The quarter-decks of these vessels are larger than those of some of the old-fashioned men-of-war, and below, the owner's quarters are more roomy than were those of the captain of a line-of-battle ship. As a rule there is not much practical seamanship to be acquired by the owners of such vessels, especially if the work is all summer coasting; but for those who like to play passenger, and are blessed with a good digestion, fair sea legs, and a happy-go-lucky temperament, nothing could be more delightful. Of course, it is annoying to be thought a lubber by the people forward, or to feel that the sailing-master has not only the best of all sea arguments, but the practical control of the vessel; still some good fellows " revel in the passive pleasure of sailing about in a yacht, without knowing anything or caring anything about the mariner's art, just as other men w...
