The genre is anecdotal, for the author has researched widely, utilized an amount secondary material, and interviewed persons who knew, were related to, overheard, slept with, liked or disliked the Kennedy siblings. The result is a continuous story that leaves you rather sad at the portraits of most everyone involved. Young John seems to have had a warm and charismatic personality, a combination of humility and vanity, a voracious sexual appetite, and a hesitancy toward commitment, until he loved enough to marry. He took the marriage seriously enough to enter marriage counseling with Carolyn, a decision that solidified their relationship and deepened their maturity. Carole Radziwill's memoir, What Remains, portrayed Carolyn--her close friend-- much more positively. From that book and this, it is hard to like Caroline. Neither the brother nor the sister could have lived an easy life, and certainly not a normal one. This is perhaps a book for Kennedy afficiandos, though it leaves you with a heavy heart.
