In December 1944, when Allied forces seemed to have decisively turned the tide in World War II, the German Army mounted one last major attack, which became one of the bloodiest battles of the war -- 80,000 American soldiers died, and German casualties were estimated at twice that figure. American Experience: The Battle of the Bulge offers a documentary look at this brutal event, recreating the story with newsreel footage and interviews with survivors of the battle. This PBS documentary does a good job of recreating the Battle of the Bulge was like for those who fought in it. The mud, the cold and the horror of war all were factors in this battle.
It emphasizes the Battle for Bastogne, which was important but not the only major conflict within the Battle of the Bulge.
The battle for Elsenborn Ridge, for Skyline Drive and Clervaux (Clerf) aren't even mentioned.
These were major battles that helped decided the outcome. If it were not for those who fought on Skyline Drive or in Clervaux or St. Vith, the 101st airborne would not have been able to enter Bastogne.
The battle for Elsenborn ridge denied the Germans the access to roadways west that they desperately needed for their plan to work. That the two US Infantry divisions there were able to hold out for 2 days until reinforcements arrived is amazing, and a badge of honor to the soldiers who fought there.
It does have material on the retaking of the Bulge. That material makes this a good resource.
