Seller's Description:
Very Good in Very Good jacket. Book Royal octavo, hardcover, near fine in VG black and white and green pictorial dj. 271 pp. including index. The story of ships, shipping companies and shipping men who served Americ a since the nation was founded. Lively, informal maritime history from earliest sailing vessels to today's super liners.
As I child I really enjoyed the "you are there" series of books on historic events. This book is written in the same simplistic style. Of course America was a much simpler place` in 1956 than it is now (2008). Before the days of mass media even a simply told story of great ocean liners could capture the hearts and minds of a relatively provincial populace.
The style of the book is extremely dated and there is not really much important information here. There is lots of flag waving and sexism, but that was the fifties. If you collect ocean liner books, this is an amusing piece to add to your collection, nothing more.
