The purpose of this book is to provide a thorough and integrated analysis of Anglophobia in the United States during the late 19th century; the author, a student of William Appleman Williams, argues that the intense dislike of England occurred on two levels of national thought, one demanding economic, financial, and political independence from England, and the other calling for America's commercial supremecy in the Western Hemisphere; on the domestic level, anglophobia was particularly intense among agrarians in the West and South, regions where the impact of British capital and dependence on England as an agricultural market were seen as necessary evils; on the foreign policy level, despite increasing agricultural production and industrial capacity, control of the domestic market and an expanding export trade, the nation seemed incapable of breaking free from the British economic orbit, leading to an intense economic nationalism (black cloth with bright silver lettering; blue dust jacket is shelfworn with tears and chips along upper edge, otherwise intact)
