Amanda is a novel, but its uplifting story could very well have happened. In the 1830s, a Mormon family is forced to move from Missouri to avoid religious persecution and heads to the Dakota Territory, where they start a new life. Once in the Dakotas, along with the two other families that left with them, they establish their new farms. Amanda, her older brother, Aaron, and their little sister, Melissa, find a new friend, a young Indian brave. As they all grow older, a great friendship develops between the young Indian and Aaron. Amanda finds herself attracted to the Indian, but is afraid to let anyone know about her feelings. Amanda goes through many challenges and tragedies before she decides to follow her brother and sister, who have moved to Utah to join the Mormons in Salt Lake City. It is there that she finally affirms her purpose in life. Jackie Gibson Villarreal was born into a large family in Southern Utah. "When I was just a little over a year old, we moved to Southern California. While growing up, I always felt very blessed to have a lot of sisters and brothers. I still feel that way, now that I have children of my own. I was asked why I wrote this story. It's very simple. I wanted my grandchildren to be able to read something that didn't expose them to the type of language and sexuality in many of today's books. It was also a way they could read about some of the hardships that people endured, and still go on with their lives." http: //spbra.com/JackieGibsonVillarreal
