All Saints, All Souls, and Halloween is a great introduction to three festivals: Halloween (October 31), All Saints' Day (November 1), and All Souls' Day (November 2). The book looks at the traditions connected with these festivals and describes the European, Christian, and African influences of each observance. The book also depicts Halloween animals such black cats, owls, snails, and bats. What I found interesting is why pumpkins are used for Jack O' Lanterns; the Irish used hollowed turnips to place lights in and to scare away demons; however, when the Irish came to America they found that pumpkins made better lanterns than turnips. Though a book for children, adults will find this a succinct and informative book on three interesting festivals.
