Although dated, this remains a fine, if not the finest, biography written by a contemporary of Schweitzer. Largely forgotten now, Schweitzer was a brilliant musician and theologian who gave up a comfortable career to become a medical doctor. He then traveled to Africa where he spent the rest of his life as a secular medical missionary. Seaver, an Anglican priest, spent several years with Schweitzer gathering the materials for this book, which Schweitzer himself acknowledged was a superior study of the man. Although out of print, copies remain available and are well worth reading.
