One of the outstanding artists of the 20th century, Agnes Martin created ethereal abstractions while living almost as a hermit in New Mexico and issuing Zen-like pronouncements about her art. Photographer Donald Woodman, who shared her property (which he owned) and her life for seven rollercoaster years, takes us behind that legend in this affectionate and respectful, unvarnished and candid account to reveal an exasperating, troubled, earthy, but brave and determined painter. At the heart of the memoir is a surreal journey with Martin down Canada's Mackenzie River, toward the Arctic, which her "voices" instructed her to undertake. Illustrated by Woodman's photographs, this book adds a crucial dimension to the Martin story and is destined to become a small classic of art biography. Agnes Martin at Tate Modern (through Oct 2015) presents the first comprehensive survey of the seminal artist Agnes Martin. Martin was renowned for her subtle, evocative canvases marked out in pencil grids and pale colour washes. This internationally touring show demonstrates Agnes Martin as one of the pre-eminent painters of the twentieth century and traces her career from early experiments to her final painting from 2004. Agnes Martin is co-curated at Tate Modern by Frances Morris, Director of Collection, International Art and Tiffany Bell, with Dr Lena Fritsch, Assistant Curator, Tate Modern. The exhibition is organised by Tate Modern in collaboration with Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Dusseldorf, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, New York where it will tour throughout 2015 and 2016.
