SYNOPSIS: Three million Americans took part in the Vietnam War. This figure is so large it is almost an abstraction. But the war was not an abstraction. It consisted of hundreds of thousands of shattered lives and shattered limbs. Every soldier who fought in Vietnam was changed by the war. Twenty-three-year-old Frederick Downs, Jr., Second Lieutenant 05337689, was born and raised in Ingman, Indiana. Assigned to Delta Company, Third Brigade, Duc Pho, Vietnam, on September 8, 1967, Downs served there in the infantry, patrolling the jungles until his left arm was blown off and the rest of his body mutilated. He had stepped on the trigger of a Bouncing Betty land mine near Tam Ky on January 11, 1968, and was evacuated by helicopter. That story was told in The Killing Zone, a book published in 1978. For many that would have been the end. Some would have died; some would have refused or been unable to go on living. But that was not the end of Lieutenant Downs's story. It went on with this courageous man's arrival at the Second Surgical Field Hospital, Chu Lai. In the first hours following the accident, Lieutenant Downs hovered between death and its dread alternative--a half life of physical helplessness and dependency. By sheer will he was able to rekindle a remarkable spirit that carried him forth into a new life. It was a torturous journey. First, there were daily operations and weeks of wracking pain as his body was put together again. Once out of mortal danger, the tasks were even harder: how to gather for himself, by himself, friends, work, loved ones, lovers--the stuff of life. Aftermath is the story of how one man did this. Frederick Downs, Jr., is currently director of Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service for the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C. He has won an award for his work with the handicapped. Downs was presented with eight awards for his courage in Vietnam, among them the Silver Star and four Purple Hearts. Now, Downs is a marathon runner, a member of the Screen Actor's Guild, and a general aviation pilot.
