I can attest to it's thoroughness. It is a huge tome that took quite a bit of time to get through. I can't say it added much to my knowledge about Mr. Hitler, but I've been studying him and his regime since the late 1970's. I am not letting this out of my library, though. It is a great biography and reference.

The Most Definitive Biography of Hitler Available
This is a must have for anyone who wants to own the most thorough biography of Hitler's life. John Tolands covers Hitler from his birth in Austira, through his horrible treatment by an abusive father and his deep love of his mother. It explores his school years, his years as a vagabond and his moving to Germany and joining the Army during World War One. You will learn of his daring exploits as a soldier earning him the Iron Cross, his being wounded and the huge impact the surrender of Germany had upon his life and views. During the war you will get a insight to Hitler and his love for dogs. With interest you will read about his spying on and then joining the Nazi Party and how he almost immediately had a huge impact upon it's program and political platform. Watch Hitler become a dynamic and powerful speaker and see the conditions that led to the rapid rise of the Nazi Party until the Beer Hall Putsch. You will read with great interest his turning the trial into a propaganda triumph and experience his writing of Mein Kampf. As you progress you will see how he led the Nazis back into the political field, rose to power, purged his enemies and then turned Germany into a economic and military powerhouse. As these things happen you will learn about Geli Raubal and Eva Braun the two most important significant others in his life and how he related to them. Then, once in power you will see him through bluff and bluster reoccupy the rhineland, pull off the Anschluss with Austria and take Czechoslovakia. Then, make a pact with the USSR, conquer Poland and then conquer most of Europe. John Toland covers each of these significant historical events thoroughly. Then, you'll have a front row into the invasion of Russia and Hitler's plans for conquering it, Britain and how he approved yet left no paper trail on the Final Solution. You'll learn about Hitler's leadership and misleadership throughout the war, the drive to build the bomb, the jets and v-1 and v-2 rockets and his decisions regarding the last offensive in the Battle of the Bulge and his decision for leaving a destroyed Germany after his death. You'll watch his health fail, his empire crumble and be up close and personal as he marrie Eva Braun, commits suicide and leaves behind him almost total ruins. Each stage of this book covers each event thoroughly and clearly. It is a easy and fun book to read. While thorough it is never boring or full of information you don't need. You'll come away from reading this book with clear and deep understanding of this complex, sometimes genius, sometimes madman whose influence still impacts Europe and the world to this day. If you love World War Two, Nazi or Hitler books, or if you want to just understand and learn more about Hitler (his personal and public life), this book is a must have. A five star book for sure.

illuminating book
I was impressed with the depth of information about Hitler that Mr. Toland provided. I used to think that I knew quite a bit about Adolf, but until I read this book for the 1st time, I knew next to nothing. Each time I pick up this book, I seem to find out something new. It is my opinion that anyone who wants to know more about one of the most evil men in hostory should read this book.

Revealing look at a mad man
Toland has written the definitive biography of the most evil man in history with this book. Starting with his childhood and through his formative years we get a picture of Hitler through the eyes of those who knew him and the people that shaped his world view.
Filled with first hand accounts of Hitler the man from those who were in his inner circle, this is a book of history that reads like a novel.
Highly recomended to anyone who wants to understand Hitler and his world
