The work shows Death in conversation with a parade of types, from the Pope and Kaiser through Cardinal, King, Monk, Knight, Doctor, Salesman, Sexton, Craftsman, Farmer, Girl, and finally Baby. Death is sung by a baritone, and the other parts by mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotjin, who modulates her voice according to the various characters.
