Additions to Bibliography. Author Index. Subject Index. Business stamp on fep. Pencil erasure residue on fep. The first edition was published in 1946. The author wrote in the Preface to the First Edition that his intention was to give an account of some of the actions of X-rays and other ionizing radiations on living cells. The author died before the Second Edition was published. In his colleague's Preface to the Second Edition, it is noted that there were textual revisions and some additions which Lea had himself written into his own copy of the First Edition. This work was believed to be 'of permanent value to the student of radiobiology'. Douglas E. Lea (MA, PhD) was born in 1910 in Great Britain. During his career, he worked as a physicist at England's Strangeways Laboratory and as a reader in the Department of Radiobiology in the Department of Radiotheraputics at Cambridge University. The majority of his work dealt with the effects of radiation on cells. Lea died in an accident in Cambridge in 1947. The study of the action of radiations on viruses, genes and chromosomes had, by 1946, reached a stage where experiments were mainly quantitative, and the interpretations therefore necessarily involved some mathematics. The author, in developing such mathematical interpretations, kept the algebraic detail in the background as far as possible. The author, in his treatment of those forms of biological damage which were believed to be initiated by individual ionizing acts, recognized and allowed for the spread of the energy absorbed within a molecule over distances of a few millimicrons, and for the effects of energy absorbed in the aqueous phase surrounding a biological structure.
