Edgar Lander. Good. No Jacket. Ex-Library. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. BOOK: Previous Owner Markings/Ex-Library; Repaired; Rear Free Endpaper Missing; Rear Endpaper Pulled From Removal of Pocket; Synopsis From Dust Jacket Glued Onto Half Title; Corners, Spine Bumped; Moderate Shelf Rub to Boards; Boards, Edges Moderately Soiled; Slight Yellowing Due to Age. DUST JACKET: Missing. SYNOPSIS: In his new book Sir Philip Gibbs shows how the clash of ideas is dividing the human tribes into hostile camps, preventing the use of reason, or the compromise of common sense, and creating great danger of war and revolution. There are many passionate problems in this account of the world today-not least of which is the tragic problem of the Jewish race in a new era of persecution, which the author treats with candour and sympathy. Another is the decline of Christian idealism, resulting in a scorn for pity, mercy and chivalry. Another is the retreat of Democracy before the driving efficiency of autocratic powers. One of the most interesting chapters is the story of the League of Nations and its failure to fulfill the hopes of the idealists, with their faith in a code of justice and collective security. Throughout the book there are conversations with intelligent people busy with these problems, but Sir Philip does not hide his own views. He states them fearlessly, though with his habitual dislike of harsh dogmatism and self-conceit. Grim though some of his story is, it is not pessimistic. On the contrary, he believes that the rulers of Europe are becoming fearful of the drift to No Man's Land, and are anxious to ease the tension and their own appalling risks. Sir Philip criticizes British foreign policy since the war, and is convinced that it has been one long series of tragic mistakes until recent days, when British statesmen suddenly awakened to the enormous dangers confronting the whole Empire. This is a book of vital interest, written by a trained observer and a famous reporter of contemporary history, who writes always with a vivid pen and an urgent desire to get at the heart of truth.
