Seller's Description:
Fine in Fine jacket. Book First edition, hardcover. Red cloth with black titles. xi, 278 pages. Appendix, notes, bibliography, index. Fine with top corner of front board very lightly bumped, in a fine, mylar-covered dust jacket. A study of Zane Grey, who established the universal stereotype of the American West. "According to Arthur G. Kimball, a substantial irony that emerges from a study of Grey is that 'most critics have paid scant attention to romance-so central to the novels-and erotic elements of Grey's books. ' ACE OF HEARTS offers a fresh reading of all of Zane Grey's novels....Included are discussions on Grey's use of formula, his portrayal of the landscape, and his treatment of the 'Code of the West, ' as well as lawmen and outlaws. An appendix lists all fifty-six Grey novels with a short description of plot and characterization."

This critical review of the Westerns of Zane Grey by Mr. Kimball is a pleasurable, enjoyable read. I have had my copy of this book for over four years and I return to it from time to time to check on facts about Zane Grey and his writing. Its contents contain chapters devoted to different aspects of Grey's writing such as: The Formula, or pattern he followed in nearly all of his works; The Critical Setting, or how he used the environment to shape his characters; and so forth. This book also gives a short description of the 56 "westerns" beginning with Heritage of the Desert, 1910 to Boulder Dam, 1963. Overall, this is a great book to own, about the greatest author of the American West.
