"Acclimatizing" the roots of earth education.
We have moved on a long way from the early days of "Acclimatizing". Some of the activities in Steve Van Matre's workshops came straight from the book "Acclimatising" and its predecessor "Acclimatizing" though have been developed and improved since. The Rainbow Earthwalks development team in UK used a lot of the quiet walk activities as the basis of the new earthwalk activities and indeed many of us have been using them as part of earthwalks since we first started doing earth education. It is just that the descriptions are very brief and most of them do not need props which can be a bit scary for people when they first start. Props help give some confidence. Several of the activities in Steve's workshop earthwalk are from Acclimatising.
You can see in "Acclimatizing" the embryonic ideas for activities in Sunship Earth, Earthkeepers, Muir Treks and other programmes and it still serves as a source of inspiration for those lucky enough to be able to get hold of a copy. It has been out of print for quite a long time but occasionally one spots a second hand copy. It is often not easy to work out how to do one of the activities effectively from the brief descriptions in Acclimatizing but many people have worked them up and used them.
You will see the inspiration from "Acclimatizing" appearing in activities from many organisations such as RSPB, Wildlife and Wetland Trust. IEE has moved on to a more programmatic and systematic approach but books like Acclimatizing and "Acclimatisation" are not just a fascinating record of the journey, they provide the starting point for many of the activities that have now been developed.
